Shohei Ohtani's All-Star jersey breaks auction record

Two things Los Angeles Angels two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani seemingly can't stop doing this season are setting records and cracking smiles at ballparks.

Per Brian Murphy of the MLB website, a 2021 American League All-Star jersey autographed by Ohtani closed at $130,210 on Wednesday in an auction run by MLB Auctions. That broke the previous record for the highest-priced item offered by that service dating back to 2001.

Ohtani also held the previous record of $121,800 set three days earlier for one of his game-worn Angels jerseys from July 2 of this year. The 27-year-old international superstar never wore the All-Star jersey.

According to Murphy, net proceeds from Ohtani's All-Star jersey go to benefit the Baseball Assistance Team, which assists former players, managers, scouts, umpires, and others employees (and family members) across multiple professional baseball leagues, including the minor leagues and Negro Leagues.

Net proceeds from the Angels jersey will go to the Angels Baseball Foundation. According to its website, that foundation "concentrates on investments in education, healthcare, arts and sciences, and community-related youth programs throughout the region" and also provides children in the community with the opportunity to "experience the great game of baseball."

And some think Ohtani couldn't be the face of MLB.
