The New York Yankees finished off the first half of the season on a positive note.
After winning four straight games, the Yankees head into the All-Star break in second place in the AL East and hold the top Wild Card spot in the American League. New York, however, will surely look to improve their team ahead of the August 3 MLB trade deadline.
While the Yankees are still without their two top sluggers, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, they will certainly look to enhance their roster on all fronts. Beyond their offense, the Yankees also need to bolster their bullpen and this former general manager is calling on them to go all-in on a coveted late-inning arm.
During an appearance on The New York Post's "The Show" podcast with Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman, former GM Steve Phillips urged the San Diego Padres to trade All-Star closer Mason Miller to the Yankees.
"When I look at the Yankees and their bullpen, like at some point, [Camillo] Doval is scaring me a little bit; he runs away from his arm all the time with his delivery," Phillips said. "I've proposed this before and I think that if I'm San Diego, I'm considering trading Mason Miller to the Yankees."
"If I'm San Diego, I need starting pitching and I need offense. And whether that's going to be [Ryan] Weathers, who they've had before, or [Will] Warren as well in a deal or Elmer Rodriguez or Jasson Domínguez and/or [Spencer] Jones, I think there's a package there," Phillips added.

Despite having the best bullpen ERA in baseball at 3.05 and already having a durable closer in David Bednar, it would be hard to pass on Miller if the Padres make him available.
Miller came over from the Athletics at last year's trade deadline and has strung together a superb first full season in San Diego. In 38 appearances this year, the 27-year-old has a dazzling 0.91 ERA with 72 strikeouts across 39.2 innings and is tied for second across Major League Baseball with 25 saves (25-for-25 in save chances).
FINAL: Toronto Blue Jays 4, San Diego Padres 5.

So why would the Padres even consider moving him? Well for much of this season, their offense has been a huge disappointment, with their team batting average ranked last in all of baseball at .226. So it goes without saying they will be looking for offensive help at the deadline.
With the Yankees seemingly having the offensive pieces to float in a potential Miller deal, there could be some room for an agreement between the two teams.
