SP Yu Darvish Mulling Retirement At 39 Years Old

In a shocking turn of events, Yu Darvish is mulling retirement ahead of the 2026 season at 39. He is considered an icon among Japanese players who have followed him to MLB. He is leaning toward voiding his contract, though there’s still much to talk over with the Padres, so the finer details are yet to be decided.

Darvish Has Had An Incredible Career

Darvish has had an extremely successful MLB career, finishing as a runner-up for the Cy Young twice. Darvish was the first Japanese-born pitcher to reach 2,000 career strikeouts, and made history with 204 total wins between the MLB and NPB, beating out Hiroki Kuroda (203) and Hideo Nomo (201) among Japanese-born pitchers. Unfortunately, he’s battled constant injuries over the last couple of seasons, but that doesn’t diminish his past accomplishments.

He underwent surgery in late last year to repair a torn UCL and flexor tendon using an internal brace, which was expected to keep him out for the entire 2026 season. Darvish announced on social media that he’s fully focused on rehabbing his elbow and that, if he gets to a point where he can throw again, he will start from scratch to compete. If Darvish feels that he can’t do it, he will announce his retirement.

It will be sad if Darvish goes, but it will greatly benefit the San Diego Padres. They signed the star pitcher to a six-year, $108 million contract extension, running through 2028, when Darvish will be 42. He has three years remaining on his $43 million deal, which means about $14 million in cap space would be freed up for San Diego just like that.

How Will This Impact the Rotation?

If this is it for Darvish, the rotation won’t be impacted. San Diego was working under the assumption that they’d be playing without him this year after he underwent surgery in November, but potential money being freed up makes the situation much more interesting. Right now, the rotation is as follows: Nick Pivetta, Michael King, Joe Musgrove, Randy Vasquez, and JP Sears.

As he enters his age-39 season, Darvish will do his best to see if there’s anything left in the tank. In 2024, he put together a fantastic season, but last year was an absolute disaster. It sounds like the Padres will monitor him closely to see how his rehab goes and whether or not he decides to hang up his cleats.
