Spencer Strider Activated by Braves, Set to Start vs. Blue Jays in Long-Awaited Return

The Atlanta Braves are turning to one of their biggest arms in hopes of steadying a rocky start to the 2025 season.

On Wednesday, the club officially activated ace right-hander Spencer Strider, who will start the series finale against the Toronto Blue Jays. In a corresponding roster move, Atlanta optioned right-hander Zach Thompson to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Strider, sidelined for more than a year after suffering a UCL injury just two starts into the 2024 season, opted for an internal brace procedure rather than Tommy John surgery. The less invasive choice allowed for a faster recovery, but the Braves have remained conservative with their prized pitcher’s return.

“We’ve been very intentional with Spencer’s ramp-up,” manager Brian Snitker said earlier this week. “It’s about making sure he’s ready not just for one start—but for the long haul.”

That ramp-up included a methodical spring progression: bullpen sessions, two appearances in North Port, and three rehab starts in Triple-A. The results? Dominant. Strider compiled a 1.32 ERA, 0.73 WHIP, and 27 strikeouts across 13 2/3 innings. His pitch count was tightly managed—60 in the first start, 75 in the second, and 90 in the third.

Strider's return couldn't come at a more crucial time. Atlanta (5-12) has clawed back to .500 baseball after an 0-7 start, but the reigning NL East champs remain in last place in the division. Adding an elite-level arm back into the mix could be the jolt the team needs.

Meanwhile, Thompson heads back to Gwinnett after making two scoreless appearances out of the bullpen, striking out three and walking one across 3 2/3 innings.

First pitch for Strider’s return is scheduled for 1:07 p.m. ET at Rogers Centre.
