St. Louis Cardinals Claim Right-Handed Pitcher

The St. Louis Cardinals are off today ahead of a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs. Today, on the off day, they claimed right-handed reliever Jorge Alcala off waivers from the Boston Red Sox. Alcala has pitched for the Minnesota Twins and the Boston Red Sox this season. In 22 games for the Twins this season, he went 0-2. He posted an 8.88 ERA, a 5.45 FIP, a 1.81 WHIP, and 28 strikeouts in 24.1 innings. The Red Sox acquired him for Andy Lugo on June 11th. He appeared in 19 games with the Red Sox. Alcala posted a 3.31 ERA, a 5.56 FIP, a 1.65 WHIP, and 18 strikeouts in 16.1 innings.

Alcala joined the Twins in 2019 and spent seven seasons pitching for the organization. In 166 games with them, he is 9-13. He posted a 4.32 ERA, a 4.48 FIP, a 1.18 WHIP, and 193 strikeouts in 187.2 innings. In eight minor league seasons, he appeared in 123 games with 62 of those coming as starts, going 23-29. He posted a 3.71 ERA, a 1.27 WHIP, and 438 strikeouts in 429.2 innings. In the minors, he pitched for the Houston Astros whom he started his career with before being traded to the Twins.
