St. Louis Cardinals Closer Off To Awesome Start In 2024
Joe Puetz-USA TODAY Sports

St. Louis Cardinals Cardinals Closer Ryan Helsley notched his 30th save yesterday afternoon at home against the Cincinnati Reds. He struck out two as the Cardinals went on to win 2-0. Helsley was the first closer this season to notch 30 saves. He is five saves clear of Cleveland Guardians Emmanuel Clase who is in second in the league with 25 saves.

Helsley is a whopping 30-of-31 in save opportunities in 2024. He blew his only save of the year in his first opportunity and has been perfect ever since. He is 2-3 this season with an ERA of 2.61. Will Helsley be able to keep up what has been a great season thus far?

Ryan Helsley Career Summary

Helsley made his MLB debut in 2019 as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals. He made his lone MLB All-Star appearance in 2022 and looks well on his way to pitching in the 2024 MLB All-Star Game at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. This has been the first season that Helsley has been the primary closer for the Cardinals and he has made the most of the opportunity.

Helsley has a career record of 23-13 with an ERA of 2.79 and 65 saves.

St. Louis Cardinals Season Summary

St. Louis(43-40) is in second place in the National League Central and currently occupies the third and final National League Wild Card spot. The Cardinals have hoovered around .500 after a miserable first few months of the 2024 regular season. They bottomed out at 15-24 on May 11 and have gone 28-16 since to get back in the MLB Playoff picture.

The St. Louis Cardinals offense has been average this season. They are 17th in batting average, 21st in home runs, and 27th in runs scored. Their offense is led by Shortstop Masyn Winn and Second Baseman Nolan Gorman. Winn is leading the club with a .286 batting average while Gorman is top 20 in the league in home runs with 16.

First Baseman Paul Goldschmidt and Third Baseman Nolan Arenado have not lived up to their all-star expectations in 2024. Goldschmidt is hitting an anemic .235 with 11 home runs and 33 RBI. Arenado has not been much better as he is hitting .262 with seven home runs and 34 RBI. Both of these players must turn back the clock for the St. Louis Cardinals to meet expectations this season.

The Cardinals pitching staff has also been average this season. They are 12th in ERA, 21st in strikeouts, and 19th in opposing batting average. Starting Pitcher Sonny Gray has been one of the best pitchers in the league this season. He is fourth in the league in wins with nine in addition to being top 20 in ERA, strikeouts, and WHIP. St. Louis Cardinals relievers JoJo Romero and Andrew Kittredge are first and second in the league respectively in holds.

Cardinals Upcoming Schedule

The St. Louis Cardinals have a day off today before hitting the road for a seven-game road trip. They face the Pittsburgh Pirates for a three-game series beginning tomorrow and then to the “Nation’s Capital” where they face the Washington Nationals for a four-game series.

St. Louis needs the production from their bullpen to transfer over to other parts of their ballclub. They are looking to return to the MLB Playoffs after a disappointing season kept them out last season. St. Louis has put itself in a strong position to be in the playoff picture deep into the summer months.
