It is draft day, the best day of the year! You have all of the beautiful, greasy food you can handle, you are hanging with your friends, and you got a pass to drink as many beers as you can, and you are ready to draft the best fantasy baseball team ever. You are through five rounds, and you have two great pitchers, two five category studs in the outfield and a first baseman. Things are starting to dwindle at shortstop, the elite options are off the board and now you are left to choose between Queens’ latest signing in Bo Bichette, or the resurrected Trevor Story in Boston.

Somehow, Story feels like an incredibly old 33-year-old. Oh wait, that’s right, that is because he has played 95 games in just two of the last six seasons. Everything turned up roses for Story in 2025 as he was healthy for a career high tying 157 games and he absolutely mashed for the Red Sox. He didn’t quite get back to his heyday but 25 home runs, 29 doubles and a career-high 31 stolen bases helped a lot of people who took a chance on Story win fantasy championships.
His hard-hit rate, barrel rate and exit velocity all hearkened back to his glory days for fantasy. Which begs the question if he is healthy, can he repeat his performance? His batting eye was still atrocious with 176 strikeouts against just 33 walks, but somehow batted .263. Talent was never really a question mark with Story, and he showed that he still had what it takes in 2025.
Bo Bichette doesn’t have the long injury history that Story does, but he did have an injury ravaged season in 2024, which prompted many questions for him heading into last season. Well, he answered the bell and played 139 games, although a knee injury ended his season early but still was very close to 20 home runs and 100 RBI.
He doesn’t run much these days, but his plate discipline is very strong, and he has been a huge plus at batting average throughout his career, which is a category many of us struggle with in roto leagues. He now calls Citi Field home which has nice dimensions for a right-handed hitter, and he will hit in a very advantageous spot in the batting order to score and drive in runs. He also had 44 doubles and a hard-hit rate that was nearly 50% which is absolutely elite. Bichette has fully rebounded from an injury filled disappointing season that was 2024.
Even though he offers you a two-round cushion at ADP, if you have read this closely at all, you will know that this choice of this article is not Trevor Story. He has the capability to have a monster season as he showed with his 25/30 campaign last year. However, the injury risk is so great. In a three-year period from 2022-2024 he played 163 games total. That means he played one full season of games in three years. The reward might be great, but the risk is far too high.
If you are a Mets fan you might have some concern about a new player on the team as New York has brought in many a high-priced player over the years only to watch them fall short of expectations when they donned the blue and orange. I believe that Bichette will be different and he will approach 25 home runs and give you near double digit steals on his new team. Story was a Cinderella tale last season as his performance caught everyone’s attention, but he is due to turn back into a pumpkin in 2026 and Bo Bichette is the much more reliable choice for your shortstop position.
