Tennessee Vols ace Liam Doyle a finalist for prestigious award that Christian Moore was snubbed from last year

Liam Doyle has had a season to remember for the Tennessee Vols.  The Ole Miss transfer has carried the Vols' pitching staff as arguably the best starting pitcher in the country in 2025.

I say arguably, but USA Baseball seems to have said more than that on Wednesday.  They named Doyle as one of three finalists for the prestigious Golden Spikes Award, which is given to the nation's top amateur player.  Doyle was joined by Florida State IF Alex Lodise and Arkansas IF Wehiwa Aloy.

Doyle has been one of the most electric pitchers in college baseball this year, and perhaps the most in Tennessee history.  He's posted a 10-3 record in 18 games across 92 innings with a 2.84 ERA and a Tennessee single-season record 158 strikeouts. He picked up the save in Tennessee's regional-clinching 11-5 win over Wake Forest on Monday with a shutout 2.1 innings with 5 strikeouts.

Doyle is now in a position to become the first ever player to win the award from Tennessee, and he's a very deserving candidate.  However, it's an award where he should have had company last year in former Vols IF Christian Moore.  Moore put forth one of the best seasons by a hitter in Tennessee history, slugging 34 home runs with 74 RBIs with a .375 average and 1.248 OPS.  Moore's hot bat helped carry Tennessee to their first ever national championship.  However, Moore didn't even make the list of finalists for the award; both Moore and Blake Burke were named as semi-finalists, but did not make the cut as finalists.

We'll find out in the next few weeks if Doyle can bring home the award to Knoxville for the first time ever.
