Cincinnati Reds manager Terry Francona believes Chase Burns' record-setting contract extension sends a strong message about the organization's future after the club locked up its emerging ace with a seven-year, $105 million deal.
Speaking after the agreement became official, Francona praised both Burns and the Reds' front office, saying the extension reflects the club's confidence in one of baseball's brightest young pitchers. The deal is the largest guaranteed contract ever given to a pitcher with fewer than four years of major league service.
"It's exciting for Chase," Francona said. "As far as the organization goes, I think it sends a great message. It's a really good thing."

Burns has rewarded Cincinnati's faith with a breakout 2026 campaign. The 23-year-old entered the All-Star break with an 11-1 record, a 2.54 ERA and 118 strikeouts over 102.2 innings, establishing himself as one of the National League's top starters.
Although Burns skipped the All-Star Game because of a minor right groin issue, Francona said the injury is not expected to delay his next scheduled start against the Seattle Mariners . The extension removes any long-term uncertainty while giving Cincinnati another cornerstone alongside Hunter Greene.
The Reds entered the second half at 43-52 and last place in the National League Central, but the franchise made it clear that Burns remains central to its long-term plans. By completing the extension before the trade deadline, Cincinnati secured one of baseball's most promising young pitchers for years to come.
Francona's comments echoed that commitment, highlighting the organization's belief that investing in Burns is about more than one player. It's a statement about the direction the Reds hope to take as they build toward future contention.
