The scoreline of Game 1 of the NLCS will credit a ninth-inning Mookie Betts walk with the bases loaded as the game-winning play, but the player of the game was starting pitcher Blake Snell.
Snell made just 11 starts in his first regular season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but he delivered another gem in his third start of the postseason. The two-time Cy Young winner tossed eight innings of one-hit, shutout ball with 10 strikeouts and no walks. The effort dropped his ERA to 0.86 in 21 innings, with wins against the Reds, Phillies and now Brewers.
The lone batter to reach against Snell was Caleb Durbin with a leadoff single in the bottom of the third inning, but he was promptly caught stealing in the next at-bat.
Snell has historically been a stud in the postseason, and in Game 1 he made history with his fifth-consecutive win with more strikeouts (40) than innings pitched (31 ⅓) in each outing. He also became the first pitcher since Don Larsen’s legendary perfect game in the 1956 World Series to face the minimum number of batters through eight innings of a playoff game.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. Snell’s dazzling Game 1 performance was the 25th time a pitcher recorded 10 strikeouts without allowing a walk or a strikeout in the playoffs. With that being said, how many of the pitchers to do this can you name in five minutes?
Good luck!
