The 3 All-Star catchers on the trade block

The MLB trade deadline is set for August 3, and rumors are running rampant around the league. With the deadline right around the corner, it appears that there are three All-Star-caliber catchers on the trade block. However, which one is more likely to be dealt away this season?

In his latest column for The Athletic, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal names Hunter Goodman of the Colorado Rockies, Shea Langeliers of the Athletics, and Adley Rutschman of the Baltimore Orioles as the three big-name catchers on the trade block. While that may be the case, Rosenthal does admit that neither is guaranteed to move. In fact, they may be long shots.

“For a variety of reasons, three intriguing All-Stars — the Colorado Rockies’ Hunter Goodman, Athletics’ Shea Langeliers, and Baltimore Orioles’ switch-hitter Adley Rutschman — are less likely to move,” Rosenthal wrote…

“Goodman (three years), Langeliers (two) and Rutschman (one) all come with additional club control beyond this season. Their respective teams are all in different positions, and Rutschman went on the injured [list] Monday with left wrist inflammation.”

Rosenthal goes on to claim that the Rockies are in no rush to trade their 26-year-old star. Especially considering he still has three years remaining on his contract after the 2026 campaign. He’s a big bat with 30 home runs this season and appears to be a building block for the front office to construct the roster around.

As for Langeliers, he has yet to sign a contract extension with the Athletics, despite several of his teammates doing so. While that may make the five-year veteran an intriguing trade option, the front office may still view Shea Langeliers as a long-term option behind the plate.

Lastly, Rutschman’s wrist injury complicates things for the Orioles. He’s been injury-prone in 2025 and 2026. Additionally, the three-time All-Star hasn’t been nearly as efficient offensively as he was in his first three years in MLB. Adley Rutschman is not scheduled to become a free agent until after the 2027 campaign. So, Baltimore could take its time making its decision, whether that means re-signing or eventually trading him.
