Happy 33rd birthday to 12-year MLB veteran, 2018 National League All-Star and Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher, Aaron Nola!
Nola has spent his entire career with the Phillies, making his debut on July 21, 2015. At just 22 years old, he made 13 starts and went 6-2 with a 2.59 ERA in 77 2/3 innings. For the next decade, Nola would be one of the most reliable starting pitchers in all of baseball. From 2016-24, Nola made at least 20 starts in every season (except the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign), reaching 30 starts six times and leading all of baseball twice (2019 and 2024).
In 2018, he went 17-6 with a 2.37 ERA in 33 starts while leading the Major Leagues in Wins Above Replacement for pitchers with 9.7.
But over the two years, the veteran has struggled. He posted a career-high 6.01 ERA in a career-low 17 starts (excluding his abbreviated 2015 season), and through 12 appearances this year he has a 5.55 ERA with 11 home runs allowed.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. Despite his struggles over the last couple of seasons, Nola is still tied for fifth-most among active pitchers with five 200-strikeouts seasons under his belt. With that being said, how many of the 28 active pitchers with at least two such seasons can you name in five minutes?
Good luck!
