After going 3-4 on the road to open the season, the Los Angeles Angels had a disastrous home opener. Welcoming in their divisional opponent, the Seattle Mariners , the Angels had one hit — an infield single by infielder Oswald Peraza — and scored one run.
The Angels' offense in the 3-1 extra-innings loss struck out 12 times, making them the first team since the Cincinnati Reds in 1934 to have a dozen strikeouts with one or no hits in their home opener, per OptaSTATS.

Mariners right-hander Bryan Woo was on his game, allowing the one hit to Peraza, walking one, and striking out six over seven innings (87 pitches). The Angels got a decent start from left-hander Reid Detmers, who scattered three hits over 6.2 innings and had four strikeouts and four walks (104 pitches).
According to MLB's Sarah Langs, this is the 30th time since 1900 that a team has allowed one or no hits in an extra-inning game (10+ innings) and the fourth in the last 10 seasons. This is the first time the Mariners have accomplished this feat in their franchise's history.

Angels manager Kurt Suzuki called Woo “one of the best starters in the league” after seeing him carve up his lineup.
“[Woo] is one of the best starters in the league. He was on his game tonight,” Angels manager Kurt Suzuki said to Anthony Solorzano of the Los Angeles Times. “He pitched well and when a guy like that pitches well you just got to do your best in battle and I feel like our guys were battling, just couldn’t muster anything up.”
Suzuki noted that his left-hander “pitched his butt off” as well, especially after his last start.
“He pitched his butt off,” Suzuki said. “It was nice to see him rebound from the last one and really have a good start.”
Detmers lasted only 4.2 innings and allowed three earned runs in the Angels' 11-9 loss to the Houston Astros on March 28.
The Angels will have a chance to rebound on Saturday when they send left-hander Jack Kochanowicz to the mound. The Mariners will counter with right-hander Emerson Hancock. Hancock is coming off a masterful first start of the year, striking out nine and pitching six no-hit innings against the Cleveland Guardians.
