The 2026 MLB trade deadline is Monday, August 3 and one of the most heavily monitored names is Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal.
With the two-time Cy Young winner set to be a free agent this season, the Tigers have to decide if they’re going to either try and get a haul of prospects for Skubal now or try to make one more run and likely lose him for nothing after the season. After potentially his last start as a Tiger on Wednesday, the vibes aren’t great.
Manager A.J. Hinch removed him after allowing an RBI single in the seventh inning to the Baltimore Orioles, but he still held a 7-1 lead when he hit the dugout. He ended with three earned runs on his ledger, and the bullpen blew the rest of the lead for the Tigers to lose 10-9 in 12 innings.
Detroit is now 51-58 and six-games behind the Chicago White Sox in the American League Central while also sitting 4.5-games out of a Wild Card spot. While it would hurt to lose Skubal, the numbers might make it impossible not to.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. Skubal is coming off the back of back-to-back 200-strikeout seasons, leading all of baseball with 228 in his first Cy Young campaign in 2024, and has 116 through 16 starts so far this season. With that being said, can you name the league leaders in strikeouts for each season since 2000?
Good luck!
