The Detroit Tigers got their ace back in their starting rotation with the recent return of Tarik Skubal, quickly followed by Jack Flaherty hitting the injured list.
Fortunately for the last-place Tigers, another arm is on the way. Three-time Cy Young winner and franchise legend Justin Verlander is expected to return on Sunday for his first home start as a Tiger since Aug 20, 2017.
The 43 year old has been out with hip inflammation since a rough first start of the season on March 30 when he surrendered five runs and six hits in just 3 2/3 innings.
While Verlander is a sure-fire Hall of Famer once his playing days are done, Detroit will likely need more than just him to pitch well if they want to climb out of the 30-44 hole they’ve dug themselves.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. Verlander will take the mound 21 strikeouts away from taking seventh-place all-time in Major League history with 3,554. With that being said, can you name every pitcher in the Live-Ball Era (since 1920) to strike out at least 2,500 batters?
Good luck!
