The 'MLB reliever 100-K seasons' quiz

With a 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers, the San Diego Padres made franchise history by clinching their third-consecutive berth in the MLB Playoffs. 

Closer Mason Miller did allow a run after Shohei Ohtani doubled home Tommy Edman – who reached on a wild pitch after Miller’s 127th strikeout of the season to keep the game alive – but he got Mookie Betts to ground out and secure a postseason spot for San Diego. While their participation in October baseball is now guaranteed, who they’ll face in the National League Wild Card is yet to be determined heading into the final weekend of the regular season. 

Miller is one of the nastiest relievers in all of baseball despite his ERA “rising,” to 1.30 in the the season’s final month. He’s recorded an absurd 127 punch outs in 69.0 innings, and his career-high 38 saves is tied with Riley O’Brien for the N.L.  lead and trails only Cleveland’s Cade Smith and Tampa Bay’s Bryan Baker in all of baseball. If the Padres are able to take leads late into postseason games, things will look very dicey for whoever is at the plate.
