The Phillies Didn’t Do Enough at the Trade Deadline

The Philadelphia Phillies improved their roster at the trade deadline, but they didn’t do enough to meaningfully increase their chances of winning the World Series.

Landing Luis Arraez adds one of baseball’s best contact hitters and gives the lineup another player who consistently gets on base. Brooks Raley strengthens the bullpen with a veteran left-handed arm, while Caleb Kilian adds pitching depth. They’re solid additions, but none truly address Philadelphia’s biggest needs.

The Phillies entered the deadline needing another impact late-inning reliever, a reliable starting pitcher, and a right-handed outfield bat. They fell short on all three fronts. Raley is a quality bullpen piece, but he’s not the dominant high-leverage arm that can swing a postseason series. Arraez is an excellent hitter, but he doesn’t solve the lack of right-handed production or add the power this lineup was missing.

For a team with World Series expectations, this deadline was simply too conservative. While other National League contenders made aggressive moves to strengthen their championship chances, the Phillies settled for complementary pieces instead of true difference-makers.

If Philadelphia falls short in October once again, this deadline will be remembered as a missed opportunity. The Phillies got better—but not nearly enough to become the team to beat in the National League.
