The New York Mets have been on the struggle bus recently (and really throughout the entire season), surrendering 10 runs in two straight games against the Chicago Cubs to drop their record to 34-46 on the 2026 MLB season. The Mets were expected by many to be championship contenders heading into this year, but thus far, the opposite has been true.
Still, recently, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic urged caution to Mets fans calling for the job of general manager David Stearns.
“Clearly, Stearns has had two years of poor decisions in many cases… and at the same time, Steve Cohen waited two years to get David Stearns… I don’t expect Steve Cohen is going to be too quick to fire David Stearns when all the reasons he wanted him, the good things that happened in Milwaukee, still are a part of his history… he’s a smart guy… the sport is not exactly teeming with GM types,” said Rosenthal, per Foul Territory on X, formerly Twitter.
Indeed, the Mets would likely need to have a replacement option in mind before they would fire Stearns, and at this point, it doesn’t seem that one has emerged.
In real time, many Mets fans and others agreed with the moves that Stearns made, including this past offseason’s signing of Bo Bichette away from the Toronto Blue Jays in free agency, but that move and others have backfired simply due to unforeseen regression from the players involved.
The Mets have also dealt with injuries and other factors, and while the fans are certainly right to be frustrated, it doesn’t seem that the team will be searching for a new general manager anytime soon.
The Mets will wrap up their series vs the Cubs on Thursday.
