Three free agents that the Rangers should pursue

The Rangers have made some moves, but there are still a number of free agents that can help out the team. They have made it a point to try to stay under the competitive balance tax, but barely went over it at $241 million. 

I have looked at free agents that are under $5 million per year. It also seems like the Rangers are done working on the lineup. Let’s look at some pitchers the Rangers could sign.

Paul Sewald

Sewald is known to Rangers fans for allowing the home run to Corey Seager in game one of the World Series. He has been good relief pitcher in the MLB with a 4.11 ERA in 9 years. That number doesn’t jump off the page, but he has been a reliable veteran.

The bigger thing is that he has been a reliable closer with 86 saves in this time. He has had a rough go of it last year with a 4.58 ERA and two saves. Those struggles have brought his projected contract down to $4.3 million per year. That is a price that the Rangers can afford and can yield a high reward.

Jordan Montgomery

This is another name that Rangers fans know. Montgomery was acquired at the trade deadline in 2023 and played huge part in their World Series run. He has not had the same success since leaving the team.

Montgomery signed a two year deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He struggled mightily in 2024 with a 6.23 ERA and a -1.4 WAR. Things were going so horribly for him that Diamondbacks owner said that he regretted signing Montgomery while he was under contract.

It continued to keep going downhill for Montgomery as he ended up getting shut down for Tommy John surgery before the 2025 season. These events will bring his price tag way down to $2.6 million and he could be a guy that can be in the back of the rotation and eat some innings for them.

A lot of Rangers fans wanted to bring Montgomery back after the World Series and now they have the chance to do it.

Taylor Rogers

The last pitcher is someone that the Rangers fans aren’t as familiar with. Taylor Rogers is another reliable reliever that the Rangers could turn to. He is coming off a season where he had a good first half followed by a shaky second half.

Rogers had a great half with the Reds with a 2.45 ERA in 33 innings with 34 strikeouts against 19 walks. That resulted in him being traded to the Pirates then to the  Cubs where he struggled. He posted a 5.09 ERA in 17.2 innings with 19 strikeouts and four walks.

The biggest flaw for Rogers was runners on base as he had problems stopping the bleeding. If the Rangers could cut down on this problem then they could get potentially get a good pitcher out of him.

He is projected to get $3.4 million on the open market.

These are all pitchers that could play big parts for the team next year. The best part is the Rangers can get all of these players without breaking the bank.
