Three potential Mariners trade deadline targets

As the MLB trade deadline approaches, the Seattle Mariners have clarified that they plan to aggressively pursue reinforcements for a playoff push. 

With the team eyeing a return to the postseason, bolstering the lineup with a formidable outfielder seems to be at the top of their priority list. 

Here are three hitters the Mariners could potentially target this summer:

Kyle Tucker, RF, Houston Astros

Kyle Tucker is one of the Mariners' most intriguing potential trade targets.

Tucker’s offensive production is undeniable, with a career slash line of .272/.350/.514. He has also been able to hit for power, tallying 29 home runs in the 2023 season. His left-handed bat would bring a much-needed balance to Seattle's lineup, which has been predominantly right-handed in recent years.

In addition to his offensive prowess, Tucker has significant defensive capabilities. He has a strong arm and excellent range, making him a reliable option in the outfield. His versatility allows him to play all three outfield positions, giving the Mariners flexibility in their defensive alignment.

Acquiring Tucker would undoubtedly come at a high cost, given his value to the Astros and multiple years of team control. Luckily, Seattle has a deep farm system and a willingness to be aggressive, which could make a deal possible if they are willing to part with some of their top prospects.

Luis Robert Jr., CF, Chicago White Sox

Another potential target for the Mariners is Luis Robert Jr. At just 26 years old, he has already showcased his immense potential, blending power, speed and exceptional defense. He has generated trade rumors from several teams across the league, as he is currently stuck on the worst team in baseball.

Robert’s offensive numbers are impressive, slashing .275/.324/.500 for his career. He can change the game with his bat, hitting 38 home runs and stealing 20 bases in the 2023 season. His power-speed combination would add a dynamic element to Seattle's lineup.

Defensively, Robert is a standout. He possesses elite speed and range, which allows him to cover a significant amount of ground in the outfield. His strong arm adds another layer of defensive reliability, making him a Gold Glove-caliber center fielder.

The White Sox, currently rebuilding, might be willing to part with Robert if the right offer comes. The M's would likely need to offer a package of top prospects and young major league talent to secure his services, but his potential impact on offense and defense makes him a compelling target.

George Springer, OF, Toronto Blue Jays

34-year-old George Springer brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of postseason success. He was a key player in the Astros' 2017 World Series championship (he was the WS MVP).

Although Springer is having a poor year at the plate (.570 OPS in 68 games), his offensive production over his 10-year career is impressive. Despite dealing with injuries in recent seasons, he still hit 21 home runs and posted a .732 OPS in 2023.

Defensively, Springer’s experience and leadership are invaluable. While he may not have the same range as earlier in his career, he possesses a strong arm and can effectively play both corner outfield positions. His postseason experience, his main selling point, would be a significant asset for a Mariners team looking to make a deep playoff run.

Springer’s contract, which runs through 2026, could be a stumbling block, as it comes with a substantial financial commitment. However, if the Blue Jays decide to retool their roster and Seattle can get him by giving up a minimal amount, a trade could benefit both teams.
