The Detroit Tigers will have a busy offseason ahead as the team regroups and attempts to build a roster capable of making a deep postseason run. For the second straight year, Detroit fell in the ALDS, once again losing a decisive Game 5 to the Seattle Mariners.
The Tigers face several key decisions this winter, including the future of left-handed ace Tarik Skubal. Another major consideration will be second baseman Gleyber Torres, who may be entering unrestricted free agency.
The 28-year-old infielder joined Detroit last offseason on a one-year, $15 million deal and thrived as one of the team’s most consistent hitters. Torres posted a .256 batting average, .358 on-base percentage, .745 OPS, 16 home runs and 74 RBIs across 145 appearances.
As Torres weighs his options and future, the Tigers took matters into their own hands on Thursday. Detroit announced that Torres has been given the qualifying offer, a one-year deal worth $22 million. “The Tigers today extended a qualifying offer to INF Gleyber Torres,” the team wrote on X.
A qualifying offer is a standard procedure that allows teams to retain negotiating rights with a pending free agent. Torres has until November 18 to accept or decline the offer. If he declines, Detroit would receive draft pick compensation should he sign elsewhere.

Torres now faces a pivotal decision. Accepting the qualifying offer would give him a one-year, $22 million deal, a raise from his previous salary, and keep him in Detroit for another season.
It also allows him to re-enter free agency next year without draft pick compensation attached, which could expand his market. Declining the offer means he will test free agency immediately, but any team that signs him would have to forfeit a draft pick, which could shrink his options.
From a performance standpoint, Torres has earned the offer. He ranked among Detroit’s most productive hitters and played a key role in their playoff push. His consistent bat, defensive versatility and clubhouse presence make him a valuable piece for any contender. However, if Torres is seeking long-term security, he may opt to decline and pursue a multi-year deal elsewhere.
The Tigers benefit either way. If Torres accepts, they retain a proven infielder for another run. If he declines, they gain compensation and flexibility to explore other options. With the team looking to take the next step in 2026, Torres’ decision will be one of the first dominoes to fall in what could be a defining offseason.
