The Tigers are eyeing bullpen upgrades and the Twins’ Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax are increasingly part of the conversation. According to Bob Nightengale’s latest column, Detroit is one of several teams showing serious interest in both relievers.
Jhoan Duran is the headliner.
A 27‑year‑old flamethrower who ranks among MLB’s best relievers. Through 43 games and 42.1 innings this season, he has 15 saves, struck out 47 batters, and posted a 1.49 ERA with a 1.09 WHIP. Duran led the Twins in May with a 0.60 ERA over 15 innings to earn American League Reliever of the Month honors while averaging 12.00 strikeouts per nine innings. He consistently hits triple digits on his fastball and features elite swing‑and‑miss stuff.
Griffin Jax offers a contrasting profile.
In 40.1 innings over 43 appearances, the 30‑year‑old righty has struck out 65 and carries a 4.02 ERA with a 1.24 WHIP. His strikeout rate is solid, but he’s been less consistent, and his ERA sits well above Duran’s.
Both pitchers bring control, strikeouts, and postseason upside.
For the Tigers, who’ve leaned heavily on a bullpen that’s solid but not elite, the appeal is obvious. They need more swing-and-miss in late innings. A lot will hinge on asking price and the Twins’ willingness to sell, but both arms check Detroit’s need box.
Detroit already has Aroldis Chapman and David Bednar on its radar as potential additions. If Minnesota entertains offers, the Tigers could pivot to Duran or package for Jax as depth. Neither deal is close, but interest is real. When contenders start dialing up the Twins, look for Detroit to make sure its bullpen call goes through.
