Tigers Designate Andre Granillo For Assignment

The Tigers announced that they have selected the contract of outfielder Max Clark, as move that was reported earlier this week. Fellow outfielder Matt Vierling has been placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to July 30, with a left adductor strain. That opens an active roster spot for Clark. To open a 40-man spot, right-hander Andre Granillo has been designated for assignment.

Granillo, 26, has never pitched for the Tigers at the major league level. He was just claimed off waivers from the Nationals earlier this month. He was sent to Triple-A Toledo and has been there since.

He will likely be back on waivers soon, though it’s possible the Tigers could look to trade him before the August 3 deadline. His big league career is still quite limited, as he has thrown 30 1/3 innings, allowing 6.23 earned runs per nine. His 10.6% walk rate is above average and his 14.9% strikeout rate is well worse than par.

Teams are clearly interested in his larger body of work in the minors. From 2023 to 2025, he logged 175 1/3 innings split between Double-A and Triple-A. His 12.7% walk rate in that time was quite high but he managed to strike out 31% of batters faced. He was traded to the Nats in February and had struggled this year, which led to him being on waivers and claimed by Detroit. In 35 1/3 Triple-A innings in 2026, split between the affiliates of the Nats and Tigers, he has a 6.88 ERA, 19.9% strikeout rate and 10.6% walk rate.

Given the declining numbers, it’s possible he clears waivers this time. If that comes to pass, he would stick with the Tigers in a non-roster capacity. He hasn’t yet been outrighted in his career and has less than three years of service time, so he would not have the right to elect free agency.
