Tigers Have Built a Playoff Lineup That Still Needs One More Piece

At the All-Star break, Detroit’s position player group has overachieved and over-delivered. The Tigers’ offense ranks in the top 10 in OPS and runs scored, thanks to a mix of star production, depth, and better-than-expected bounce-backs.

Here’s the lineup grades at the break.

Outfield: A
Riley Greene is having a career year, slashing .284/.335/.544 with 24 homers and 78 RBI. Wenceel Perez has made the most of his opportunities since returning from the IL, and Kerry Carpenter, when healthy, adds serious pop.

Infield: B+
Gleyber Torres has been exactly what Detroit needed at second base: consistent, disciplined, and productive. Javier Baez has chipped in power and versatility. Spencer Torkelson shook off a slow start to post 21 homers and an .826 OPS, though his batting average (.234) still leaves room.

Catcher/Bench: B
Dillon Dingler hasn’t offered much offensively, but his defense plays. Colt Keith brings energy and flexibility, though the offensive impact has been uneven. Zach McKinstry has been the glue, producing at the plate (.285 AVG) and filling multiple roles, including an extended look at third base.

Looking ahead, the Tigers need to upgrade at the hot corner.

Third base remains the one clear hole. McKinstry is best used as a utility player, and Jace Jung hasn’t shown enough to earn everyday reps. The Tigers rank near the bottom of the league in OPS and production from the position.

If Detroit wants to maintain momentum and make a real playoff push, third base is where the upgrade has to happen.

Arizona’s Eugenio Suarez is the best fit: a true power bat on an expiring deal, slugging over .550 with 29 home runs. Yoan Moncada could be a more affordable fallback. Nolan Arenado is a big name with a big contract. Ke’Bryan Hayes brings glove-first value but little offensive punch.

Detroit’s offense has carried them this far. Now it’s up to the front office to give it the final piece.
