Tigers' Kerry Carpenter Reacts to Historic Spencer Torkelson Development After Reds Game

The Detroit Tigers dropped their weekend series against the Cincinnati Reds, but the bigger picture remains encouraging. After a sluggish start to the season, Detroit has won 11 of its past 16 games and now sits tied for first place in the American League Central.

A major reason for the turnaround has been the resurgence of first baseman Spencer Torkelson, who just delivered one of the best offensive stretches in baseball.

Last week, no hitter in MLB was better. Over his past seven appearances, Torkelson posted a .391 batting average, .462 on-base percentage and a staggering 1.635 OPS, along with five home runs and six RBIs.

All five of those home runs have come in his last five games, tying a Tigers franchise record for most consecutive games with a long ball. He will have a chance to break the record on Tuesday against the Atlanta Braves as he looks for a sixth straight game with a blast.

Torkelson’s surge has not gone unnoticed in the clubhouse. Kerry Carpenter showed support by reposting MLB’s graphic of Torkelson’s streak on his Instagram story, highlighting the bond between Detroit’s two hottest hitters. Carpenter has been nearly as impactful in April.

Through 26 games, the 28-year-old left-handed slugger owns a .237 batting average, .326 on-base percentage, .852 OPS, six home runs and 17 RBIs. With both players producing at this level, paired with one of the best starting rotations in baseball, the Tigers path toward a third straight playoff appearance becomes far more realistic.

Torkelson and Carpenter have spent the past five seasons together in Detroit, debuting during the 2022 season and becoming two of the defining faces of the Tigers new era. Their paths, however, could not have been more different.

Carpenter was a 19th-round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, while Torkelson was selected first overall in 2020. But none of that matters now, both are foundational pieces of a Tigers team that looks dangerous.

If this duo keeps hitting the way they have in April, Detroit’s ceiling will only continue to rise.
