The Detroit Tigers entered the 2026 season with legitimate playoff hopes, but their year has quickly gone downhill. They now sit at 21-34, 10 games behind the division-leading Cleveland Guardians, and own the worst record in MLB for the month of May at 5-18.
A wave of injuries has decimated the roster. Javier Báez (ankle), Kerry Carpenter (shoulder), and Parker Meadows (arm) are all on the injured list. The biggest blow has been the loss of ace Tarik Skubal, who underwent surgery to remove loose bodies from his pitching elbow after being scratched from a start in early May.
On Tuesday night at Comerica Park, the Tigers blew a late lead and fell 10-6 to the Los Angeles Angels , with Vaughn Grissom hitting a grand slam and driving in six runs for the visiting team. Detroit had led 6-4 entering the eighth inning before the bullpen collapsed.
On Wednesday, the Tigers made a move to shake things up. They traded right-hander Connor Seabold to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for minor league left-hander Juanmi Vasquez. To create roster space, the Blue Jays transferred right-hander José Berríos, who underwent Tommy John surgery earlier in May and will miss the rest of the season, to the 60-day injured list.

Seabold, 30, has pitched in 11 relief appearances for Detroit this season, posting a 3.45 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and a 14:5 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 15.2 innings. The California native has bounced around the majors since debuting with the Boston Red Sox in 2021. He carries a career 7.50 ERA in the big leagues but had a strong 2024 season in the KBO with the Samsung Lions, going 11-6 with a 3.43 ERA.
In return, the Tigers acquired 22-year-old left-hander Juanmi Vasquez, whom the Blue Jays signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2022. Vasquez was pitching at High-A Vancouver this season, where he posted a 5.87 ERA with 35 strikeouts in 23 innings.
The Tigers will look to bounce back on Wednesday evening when they host the Angels again. Casey Mize (2-3, 2.47 ERA) will start for Detroit against José Soriano (6-3, 2.44 ERA) for Los Angeles, with first pitch set for 6:40 p.m. ET.
In Toronto, the Blue Jays will host the Miami Marlins in the finale of their three-game series at Rogers Centre at 1:07 p.m. ET. The series is tied 1-1.
