The Detroit Tigers have Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal on top of the rotation for this season.

The Tigers also added former Houston Astros ace Framber Valdez, and Detroit then brought back legend Justin Verlander on Tuesday on a one-year deal.

Shortly after the Verlander signing, a report surfaced that pitcher Reese Olson will miss the entire 2026 campaign after undergoing right shoulder labral repair surgery on Feb. 2.

Evan Petzold of The Detroit Free Press mentioned Olson’s status could be in doubt at the start of February. The Tigers signed Valdez to a three-year, $115 million deal on Feb. 4, and then inked Verlander to a one-year deal on Tuesday, so it seems the team was preparing to be without Olson for the season.

Olson sustained a right shoulder strain in July and missed the remainder of the season, but he was expected to return for the 2026 season.

Olson spent the last three seasons with Detroit, making a total of 53 starts with a 13-19 record. In 2025, he went 4-4 with a 3.15 ERA, the best of his career, before suffering an injury and landing on the IL in July.
