Tigers Receive Riley Greene Update Before Dodgers Game
USA TODAY Network

Riley Greene is officially taking the next step in his return from a hamstring injury. The Detroit Tigers All-Star outfielder will begin a minor league rehab assignment Saturday night with Triple-A Toledo, giving him a chance to test his recovery in game action before a potential return to the major league roster.

Greene has been sidelined since Aug. 12 with a left hamstring strain, but his latest progression suggests the Tigers could soon have one of their key offensive players back. He completed a full workout on the field before receiving the green light for his next step.

According to Tigers beat reporter Evan Woodbery, Greene will begin his assignment with the Toledo Mud Hens in St. Paul, with the club hoping he can play two games before rejoining Detroit in Minneapolis on Monday if everything goes according to plan.

The timeline would allow Greene to get through a short rehab stint over the weekend before the Tigers continue their road trip against the Minnesota Twins.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch had indicated that Greene was “doing really well” after completing baserunning work and live outfield drills. The Tigers were hopeful he could begin a rehab assignment before Monday’s off day.

The latest update provides a more concrete path toward that return. Detroit will now see how Greene’s left hamstring responds to consecutive games and the demands of playing in the field.

Before landing on the injured list, Greene had appeared in 117 games, collecting 115 hits while batting .273 with a .366 on-base percentage and .450 slugging percentage. He had also hit 16 home runs and driven in 54 runs.

For Detroit, the rehab assignment is an encouraging development even if Greene still needs to complete the final steps without a setback. If the weekend goes smoothly, the Tigers could have their All-Star outfielder back in the lineup as early as Monday.
