Tigers Release Sean Guenther

The Tigers released Sean Guenther on Friday, according to his MLB.com transaction log. The left-hander hasn’t pitched in the majors since last May. He had been on the minor league injured list for most of the season prior to his release.

Guenther made his MLB debut with the Marlins in 2021, giving up 22 runs (21 earned) in 20 1/3 innings down the stretch. He underwent Tommy John surgery the following April, and the Marlins cut him from their roster at the end of the season. The Tigers put in a claim and then successfully passed him through waivers shortly afterward.

After working his way back from the IL, Guenther pitched in the minors until the Tigers selected his contract in August 2024. Nearly three years since he last pitched in the majors, he joined Detroit’s bullpen and played a key role in the team’s miraculous push for a Wild Card spot. In 17 appearances that season, Guenther gave up two runs in 21 innings of work, earning three wins and two holds. He pitched four more games in the playoffs, giving up one run on two hits and collecting another win.

Unfortunately, injuries held Guenther back again in 2025. He pitched to a 5.23 ERA in 10 1/3 innings at the MLB level and a 5.63 ERA in another eight frames in the minors. The Tigers DFA’d him after the season. While he quickly re-upped with the team on a minor league contract, his 2026 has been equally disappointing. He produced a 5.40 ERA in 16 2/3 innings at Triple-A before hitting the IL at the beginning of May. He hasn’t pitched since.

Now a free agent, Guenther can seek an opportunity with a new organization.
