Tigers Share Troubling Kerry Carpenter Update After Cubs Game

Detroit Tigers outfielder Kerry Carpenter is dealing with a bruised heel after exiting Monday night's 10-inning win against the Chicago Cubs, putting his status in doubt for the remainder of the series.

Manager A.J. Hinch said Carpenter has been battling the injury for several games before it became noticeable late Monday. After reaching base on a Cubs error in the 10th inning, Carpenter appeared to be in significant discomfort on the bases, prompting Hinch to replace him with a pinch-runner. The Tigers are listing the 28-year-old as day-to-day entering Tuesday's game.

The injury adds another hurdle to an up-and-down season for Carpenter. Earlier this year, he missed nearly three weeks with a left AC joint sprain suffered during an outfield collision before returning to the lineup in early June.

Despite the setbacks, he has remained one of Detroit's primary power threats, batting .206 with 13 home runs, 36 RBIs, a .279 on-base percentage and a .427 slugging percentage across 77 games.

Carpenter's availability is especially important for a Tigers offense trying to stay in the American League postseason race. Detroit has won eight of its last 11 games, including Monday's extra-inning victory over the Chicago Cubs.

The Tigers opened Tuesday with a 47-53 record, placing fourth in the American League Central. They trail the first-place Chicago White Sox (53-46), the Cleveland Guardians (53-48) and the Minnesota Twins (49-52) in a tightly contested division.

With the trade deadline approaching, Detroit will hope Carpenter's injury does not require a stint on the injured list. His power remains a key part of the lineup alongside Riley Greene as the club looks to gain ground in both the division and Wild Card race.

Hinch's decision to remove Carpenter immediately after noticing his discomfort suggests the Tigers are prioritizing caution, with more clarity on his status expected before Tuesday night's matchup against the Cubs.
