Tigers sign two-time All-Star catcher Wilson Ramos

The Detroit Tigers confirmed on Friday that they've signed free-agent catcher and two-time All-Star Wilson Ramos to a one-year contract. 

Per Jason Beck of the league's official website, the deal is worth $2 million. Detroit designated infielder Sergio Alcantara for assignment in a corresponding roster move. 

Ramos, 33, spent the last two seasons with the New York Mets. He played in 45 games during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign and hit .239 with five home runs and 15 RBI. He's routinely flashed power at the plate, as noted by the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), and reached double-digit marks for homers in seven consecutive years. 

The Mets signed James McCann to replace Ramos last month.

"Whether it’s playing in a lineup with Miguel Cabrera or working with a really talented group of young pitchers, this was an opportunity that I was excited to take on. I’m looking forward to getting to work with my coaches and teammates soon, and winning baseball games for the fans in Detroit."

Tigers general manager Al Avila said: 

"Adding a reliable veteran catcher was one of our priorities this offseason, and we know that Wilson will be a great fit for that role. He’s still producing on the field at a high level after 11 years in the big leagues, and we feel his presence in the clubhouse will be a major positive both for our young catchers and pitching staff."
