The Detroit Tigers made a surprising move in free agency recently as they signed pitcher Alex Cobb from the Cleveland Guardians a little less than two months after Detroit was eliminated three games to two by their hated division rivals.

The Cobb signing is expected to bolster a pitching staff that has improved by leaps and bounds in recent months, culminating with last season's Divisional Playoff run by manager AJ Hinch's team.

On Thursday, Cobb's comments on what made the Tigers an attractive free agent destination were revealed by veteran Detroit News reporter Chris McCosky.

"(The Tigers) became the Cinderella story of baseball," Cobb reportedly said. "I feel like the whole league was rooting for them...It was fun to see them conquer the uphill battle they had ahead of them...Obviously they have a good clubhouse and good culture going."

Cobb pitched two postseason games for the Guardians and had a rough go of it with an ERA of nearly eight runs per nine innings.

He was scratched from Cleveland's ALCS roster after getting hurt in the opening game.

Cobb has a career ERA of 3.84 since beginning his rookie career with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2011. He struck out 163 batters in 2023 with the San Francisco Giants, compiling a 3.87 ERA in 151.1 innings of work.
