During the Thursday Night Football game between the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns, a loud banging noise could be heard. It was a noise that resembled the sound of banging on a trash can.
Al Michaels, one of the best sports announcers in the field, took the opportunity to throw a jab at the Houston Astros once he heard the banging. The Astros are famously known for their sign-stealing scandal in 2017 where they banged on trash cans to cheat, among other ways. They won the World Series that season and most believe that they wouldn't have if it wasn't for cheating.
While Michaels' jab was a random one, it's something that Houston players are going to have to deal with for the rest of their lives.
"Somebody is pounding on that trash can—the Astros must be in town," he said on the broadcast.
When Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, Carlos Correa, and others are on the Hall of Fame ballots one day, the scandal will be a huge topic again. No matter what they do for the rest of their career, the first thing that many fans are going to remember about them is what they did to win a World Series.
It's unfortunate due to how talented that team was, but it's the reality of the situation. Even after winning another World Series in 2022, most of the talk around the Astros is about what happened in 2017.
Teams and players around the league felt a certain way about what happened. The Los Angeles Dodgers had a World Series stolen from them and Aaron Judge should've won the MVP. No matter what, this is behind everyone.
Houston has continued to win and that's all they can worry about.
