Los Angeles Dodgers injuries this season have primarily affected the pitching staff, but Tommy Edman missed time last month due to right ankle inflammation.
Edman is again dealing with ankle trouble and is not in the lineup Wednesday despite the New York Mets starting a right-handed pitcher. Esteury Ruiz is on the Dodgers taxi squad in the event Edman needs to go back on the 10-day injured list.
Ruiz was acquired by the Dodgers in April as part of a trade that sent pitching prospect Carlos Duran to the Athletics. Ruiz reported to Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he batted .274/.381/.411 with 12 doubles, one triple, three home runs, 20 RBI and 27 stolen bases over 45 games.
As for Edman, he tweaked the right ankle earlier in the week but has still managed to every game on the homestand thus far entering Wednesday night. Edman pinch-hit for Hyeseong Kim in the seventh inning on Tuesday and remained in the game at second base.
Edman was the designated runner at second base for the bottom of the 10th inning and scored the winning run on Freddie Freeman’s walk-off double.
Edman previously dealt an ankle injury last year when he sprained it while on rehab assignment for right wrist surgery he had after the 2023 season. That injury, coupled with the recovery process from offseason surgery, delayed Edman’s 2024 debut until the middle of August — well after he had been traded by the St. Louis Cardinals to the Dodgers.
There wasn’t much initial concern with Edman’s latest ankle trouble in May, but he wound up missing more time than expected due to lingering soreness. Edman tweaked the ankle when sliding into second base on April 29 and landed on the injured list May 3.
That created an opportunity for Kim to join the Dodgers roster for his MLB debut, and the rookie capitalized on that to cement himself with the team.
Meanwhile, Edman wasn’t activated until May 18, roughly two weeks later than manager Dave Roberts initially forecasted for his return.
