The Los Angeles Dodgers Tommy Edman will have ankle surgery next week, according to General Manager Brandon Gomes. Edman should be recovered in time for the start of spring training next year, per Fabian Ardaya. However, the timeline for his return is negotiable depending on how he feels. The infielder/outfielder has been an integral part of the team’s back-to-back championships.

Dodgers Infielder, Outfielder Set to Have Surgery Next Week

A Muted 2025

Edman has struggled to stay healthy this past season. The gritty veteran injured the ankle in early May, after getting off to a hot start. As a result, he has landed on the Injured List multiple times in 2025, missing significant parts of the regular season. The injury has limited his offensive production this year. Edman hit for a batting average of .225 with 13 home runs and 49 runs batted in. This is at least 30 points lower than this career average. Running the bases proved to be a risk for the versatile ball player. To minimize the probability of re-injury the Dodgers chose to put Edman at second base for most of his playing time. However, Edman has proven to be a Gold-glove caliber centerfielder, but the sure-handed defender was  usually replaced with a more mobile option in the late innings of the Dodgers’ postseason run.

History Repeating Itself?

Ironically, Edman was rehabbing the same injury when the Dodgers acquired him in a three-team deal at trade deadline last season. It did not take long for the one-time Cardinal to make an impact last year. His effectiveness was demonstrated in the National League Championship Series when he hit .400 against the New York Mets and he took home Most Valuable Player Honors.

In Short…

For their part, the Dodgers are hoping that the surgery to mend the ankle will limit the recurrence of injury. A healthy Tommy Edman will only boost Los Angeles’ chances of getting to October in 2026.
