The Los Angeles Dodgers weren’t able to fully reap the benefits of Tommy Edman’s versatility during the 2025 season due to lingering right ankle trouble that carried over from last year.

It resulted in Edman primarily playing second base despite the Dodgers taking measures during the second half of the season in effort to allow for the potential of playing center field. Edman wound up doing so sparingly in the World Series, and continued to assure his ankle was healthy enough to remain in the lineup.

Though, he also did not rule out the possibility of undergoing ankle surgery in the offseason.

According to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic, Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes shared that the plan is for Edman to have surgery on his right ankle next week, which will allow for a full recovery by early Spring Training 2026:

Edman first landed on the injured list in early May due to right ankle inflammation and his return was slightly delayed due to having trouble with getting past the hurdle of running without any discomfort.

After Edman aggravated his ankle while running the bases against the Boston Red Sox, he was a late scratch from the Dodgers’ lineup on July 28 and couldn’t pinch-hit in a key situation that game. There was the possibility of going on the IL the next day, but that instead wound up being Hyeseong Kim.

Edman had also avoided the injured list in early June after tweaking his right ankle during a game against the New York Mets. Then a sprained right ankle in early August required another stint on the IL.

The Dodgers at that point took a methodical approach and did not rush to activate 30-year-old so that he could make a full recovery. Edman didn’t return until five weeks later.

Tommy Edman attends Chargers game

The Dodgers have been welcomed and celebrated in various fashion since winning the World Series, and among the latest examples was Edman participating in pregame festivities at SoFi Stadium prior to watching the Los Angeles Chargers host the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Edman is a passionate Chargers fan and wore a Philip Rivers jersey.
