After missing the first two-plus months of the season with a wrist injury, Nacho Alvarez didn’t waste any time re-introducing himself as one of the club’s top prospects. He came into play Thursday with a .361 average, .540 on-base percentage, and OPS north of 1.000, and that only improved with a couple more knocks this afternoon.
However, in the seventh inning, Alvarez was removed from the game, which immediately sparked speculation. Was he traded? Is he getting the call to the majors? Is he injured?
Unfortunately, MLB.com’s Mark Bowman is reporting it is the latter, as he left the game with an oblique strain.

Oblique injuries are always tricky and usually require several weeks if not months to recover from. As of now, the severity of the injury is unknown, but it’s a brutal blow for Alvarez, who was really starting to find his footing after just returning from the IL. It looked like he was on the cusp of potentially being promoted, especially given Ozzie Albies‘ struggles this season.
Hopefully, this injury won’t keep Alvarez out too long. The Braves may need his services at some point down the line.
