The Minnesota Twins are beefing up their pitching staff.

According to Dan Hayes of The Athletic, the Twins are signing right-hander Germán Márquez to a minor league deal. He will report to Triple-A St. Paul, less than a week after being let go by the San Diego Padres.

Márquez signed a one-year, $1.75 million deal with the Padres in the offseason after spending the first 10 years of his career with the Colorado Rockies. The former All-Star was used as both a starter and a reliever for San Diego this season, providing mixed results, logging a 4-2 record through 13 games (10 starts) with a 5.26 ERA, 37 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.49 across 53 innings pitched.

The Padres released Márquez on August 8 after clearing waivers. It's been a difficult last couple of seasons for the right-hander, as he missed most of 2023 and all of 2024 after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Prior to that, the 31-year-old was one of the most durable starters for the Rockies, logging 975.1 innings from 2017 to 2022, which were the sixth-most in all of baseball during that stretch.

Márquez will now look to make an impact on a Twins ballclub that is right in the thick of the playoff race. Minnesota begins play on Thursday just half a game behind the third and final wild-card spot in the American League at 60-62. Minnesota is also just three games out of first place in the AL Central.

The Twins begin a three-game series on Thursday against the Philadelphia Phillies, with the first game being played in Dyersville, Iowa, which is the site of the "Field of Dreams Game."

Minnesota decided not to sell at the MLB trade deadline and continue to chase down a playoff spot in a weak AL.
