Twins option former No. 1 pick Royce Lewis, activate All-Star SS Carlos Correa from IL

The Minnesota Twins are optioning highly touted prospect Royce Lewis back to Triple-A St. Paul to make room for shortstop Carols Correa, who will be activated from the 10-day injured list.

The move comes as a shock, as Lewis has been playing good baseball for the Twins since getting the call-up on May 6.

The former No. 1 overall pick by the Twins in 2017, Lewis played only 11 games with Minnesota, keeping his rookie distinction in place.

The 22-year-old posted a batting average of .308, with an on-base percentage of .325 and a slugging percentage of .564. In Lewis' short stint with the big club, Lewis had four doubles, two home runs and five RBI in 40 plate appearances.

While it's a demotion on paper for White, it certainly didn't come due to his play on the field.

"We have to make difficult decisions often," Twins manager Rocco Baldelli told The Athletic. "You weigh a lot of different things. Any time a guy is playing the way Royce has been playing for us, and you're not going to be able to potentially put him in the lineup and in the lineup where you want, things get pretty imperfect real quickly. I want what's best for Royce and what's best for our team. We need to keep winning games. I think we'll be able to do that. We're adding one of the best players in the game back to play shortstop for us every day."

Correa will return to the Twins' lineup after missing nearly two weeks with a non-displaced fracture of this right middle finger. Correa suffered the injury on April 5 after being hit by a pitch during a game with the Baltimore Orioles.

The two-time All-Star is batting .255 with a .320 on-base percentage and .372 slugging percentage. Correa has two home runs with 11 RBI and eight walks in 24 games this season.
