Twins Release Cody Laweryson

The Twins released reliever Cody Laweryson, according to the MLB.com transaction tracker. Minnesota designated him for assignment last week when they activated Garrett Acton from the 60-day injured list.

Laweryson has been on the minor league injured list since mid-July with an undisclosed issue. A release was inevitable when he remained in limbo beyond the trade deadline. Injured players cannot go on outright waivers. He’ll become a free agent if he goes unclaimed and could then re-sign with Minnesota on a minor league contract.

The 28-year-old righty has pitched 20 games for the Twins over the last two seasons. Laweryson spent some time on the Angels roster over the winter but has otherwise been in the Minnesota system for his entire career. He has a 3.70 ERA across 24 1/3 big league frames with a less impressive 4.45 mark over parts of three seasons at Triple-A St. Paul.
