Twins sign former Angels closer Hansel Robles to one-year deal

The Minnesota Twins announced on Tuesday that they've signed former Los Angeles Angels closer Hansel Robles to a one-year deal.

MLB.com's Do-Hyoung Park (h/t Andrew Simon) and MLB insider Jon Heyman reported the agreement is worth $2 million and includes up to $500,000 in bonuses based on games finished.

The Angels took a flier on Robles after the New York Mets designated the right-hander for assignment in June 2018, and he settled in with his new club and then became a revelation during the 2019 campaign. That season, the 30-year-old recorded a career-best 23 saves with a 2.48 ERA, 75 strikeouts and 1.02 WHIP across 72 2/3 innings.

Like many around the league, however, Robles seemingly struggled to adapt to a shortened season held amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In 16 2/3 innings this year, he accumulated a 10.26 ERA with 20 strikeouts and only one save.

The Angels non-tendered Robles earlier this month and also traded for Cincinnati Reds closer Raisel Iglesias.

This arrangement makes sense for all involved. Robles is receiving an opportunity to bolster a bullpen and put his woeful 2020 performances out of memories, for good. Minnesota, meanwhile, gets a proven commodity on a discount and, theoretically, will be first in line to re-sign Robles if he relocates his 2019 form.
