Tyler Mahle hoping to remain with Atlanta Braves

Tyler Mahle had a surprisingly strong run after being acquired by the Atlanta Braves at the 2026 MLB trade deadline. If he has his way, his time in Atlanta will continue beyond this year.

Jesus Cano of The Athletic reported that Mahle would be interested in returning to the Braves, with Mahle saying that "it'd be crazy for anyone not to want to be here."

Mahle's acquisition received minimal attention at the time. He was viewed as a back-of-the-rotation starter, someone who could eat innings for an injury-depleted Braves pitching staff. As Mahle had posted a 5.13 ERA and a 1.394 WHiP over his 94.2 innings for the Giants, he was not regarded as a potential game changer.

Instead, Mahle became a stabilizing force for the Braves rotation. He posted a stellar 1.99 ERA and a 0.957 WHiP over his 54.1 innings, striking out 48 batters with nine walks. His excellence continued into the postseason as Mahle allowed three runs, two earned, on nine hits and two walks over his 13.1 innings, striking out 10 batters.

Chances are, Mahle will not be able to replicate that performance even if he does remain in Atlanta. However, his performance gives hope that he could be more than a solid fourth or fifth starter for a contending team. As the Braves have several question marks for the rotation in 2027, bringing Mahle back on a one- or two-year contract could work out for both parties.
