So you’re thinking of becoming an umpire? It’s a lot more hazardous of a job than it looks.
Umpire Roberto Ortiz was behind the plate for Saturday’s game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park in San Francisco, Calif. He got nailed in the head by a Rafael Devers foul tip and went to the ground.
“OOOOOHHHHHHH!! Man!!!”

(Instinctive reaction to home plate umpire getting hit in mask (face) with a high-velocity foul tip. Yikes! Ump stayed in game after medical crew checked him out.)#dodgers #giants #umpire #dodgersgiants #oraclepark #mlb pic.twitter.com/rrYth7KObk
There was a delay in the game as Ortiz was checked out medically. He ended up remaining in the game despite having his cage rattled.
Devers had fouled off consecutive pitches and ended up striking out in that at-bat in the bottom of the fourth. The Dodgers won the game 13-7.
There were some complaints about Ortiz’s umpiring too.
Following Dodgers-Giants on MLB app and Strike 2 certainly was an interesting call by Roberto Ortiz. But no hurry on that ABS. pic.twitter.com/pcudckr3ng
