Chicago Cubs closer Daniel Palencia is dealing with an elbow injury. The Cubs have battled no shortage of injury concerns throughout the season. Before the game on Friday night against the Minnesota Twins, Cubs manager Craig Counsell provided multiple injury updates, including some news in reference to Palencia’s recovery.

Jesse Rogers of ESPN shared the updates from Counsell.

It seems as if a number of pitchers could return fairly soon, but Palencia’s timeline is more uncertain. He could potentially return in the middle of August, but even that is “unclear” according to the report.

The 26-year-old closer recorded 22 saves a season ago across 54 appearances. Palencia has been limited to just 19 games pitched so far this season, however. He has recorded three saves and a 2.70 ERA during that span.

The Cubs are certainly hopeful to have Palencia available in the bullpen for the stretch run of the season as well as the playoffs. He is a difference-maker on the mound.

Updates on Daniel Palencia’s injury status will continue to be monitored and provided as they are made available. Chicago is set to enter the second half of the season with a 54-42 overall record. The Cubs are in second place in the National League Central standings, as they trail the Milwaukee Brewers by five games.

The ball club will begin the second half on Friday night at home against the Minnesota Twins. First pitch for the contest between the teams is scheduled for 8:05 PM EST at Wrigley Field in what should be a competitive contest.
