Unexpected pitcher emerging as trade piece for Marlins

The Miami Marlins are expected to receive plenty of interest in their pitching staff ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline. However, an unexpected arm may be generating the most interest.

Craig Mish of SportsGrid reported that the Marlins are getting a great deal of interest in pitcher Braxton Garrett. Mish further noted that Garrett could be an interesting change-of-scenery candidate should he be traded.

Garrett appeared to be well on his way to being a cornerstone for the Marlins rotation. He posted a 3.63 ERA and a 1.183 WHIP over his 247.2 innings between 2022 and 2023, striking out 246 batters with 53 walks.

Everything fell apart after the 2023 season. Garrett made just seven starts in 2024 due to shoulder and elbow injuries and missed the entire 2025 season after having internal brace surgery. He made only two lackluster appearances for the Marlins in 2026, allowing seven runs on seven hits and eight walks over 4.1 innings, striking out five batters.

Garrett has been much better at Triple-A this season. He has posted a 2.32 ERA and a 0.923 WHIP over his 73.2 innings in Jacksonville, striking out 80 batters with 28 walks. Despite that success and the Marlins' issues in the back of the rotation, Garrett is seemingly buried on the roster and has fallen out of favor.

A fresh start could be exactly what he needs. Garrett is an intriguing buy-low candidate, and with several years of team control left, could have an extensive market.
