Unlikely player leading Dodgers as Marlins visit
Jonathan Hui-Imagn Images

On a roster full of stars, Andy Pages currently is leading the way for the Los Angeles Dodgers' offense.

Pages will look to keep his hot streak going in the opener of a three-game home series against the Miami Marlins on Monday.

His weekend versus the Pittsburgh Pirates featured three games of at least three hits, including four hits in Los Angeles' 9-2 win on Sunday to match a career high. He set a career best with four RBIs against the Pirates and now has multiple hits in four of his past five games.

With Dodgers manager Dave Roberts bemoaning the offense's inconsistency after the team lost the series opener to the Pirates on Friday, Pages has been the answer for which the team has been looking.

"I'm just excited for Andy," Roberts said, adding that Pages' surge has been more from an improved mental approach than any mechanical adjustments. "You just see the confidence, the joy of just playing and competing. He's picked us up with some big hits. Just really happy for him."

After a road game on April 19 against the Texas Rangers, Pages was batting .159 with a .544 OPS. Five games and 13 hits later, he is batting .277 with an .861 OPS.

"They talked to me and told me to go play, relax, to be myself, and things are working out," Pages said through an interpreter.

Teoscar Hernandez also is starting to heat up for Los Angeles with key home runs in each of the previous two games, both victories over Pittsburgh. His eight homers are tied for the team lead with Tommy Edman.

The Dodgers are set to send right-hander Dustin May (1-1, 3.68 ERA) to the mound on Monday. He is 2-1 with a 1.08 ERA lifetime against the Marlins in three career starts, the most recent in 2022.

The Marlins will counter with right-hander Edward Cabrera (0-1, 6.14) as they come off a series loss on the road against the Seattle Mariners. Cabrera gave up three runs in five innings of a no-decision Tuesday at home against the Cincinnati Reds with a season-best seven strikeouts.

In four career appearances (three starts) against the Dodgers, Cabrera is 1-3 with a 10.93 ERA. He was crushed for 11 runs with nine walks in two starts against Los Angeles last season.

The Marlins received a game-tying three-run homer from Connor Norby in the eighth inning before they lost 7-6 in the 10th inning on Sunday. Norby had three hits and Agustin Ramirez hit two home runs, however his groundout to second base ended the game.

Since making his major league debut last Monday, Ramirez is batting .474 with a 1.682 OPS and has three home runs with five RBIs in five games.

"He's ready to hit every single pitch, and it feels like if it's not where he's looking for it, he's got the ability to check off and lay off tough breaking balls and get into an at-bat," Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said. "There's a real calmness to him in the box now, and when he's getting something that he's looking for in an area, he's ready to pull off an A swing."

McCullough will be making his return to Dodger Stadium after he was the first-base coach in Los Angeles the previous four seasons.

Shohei Ohtani named in lawsuit regarding $240M real estate project

Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani has been named in a lawsuit that was filed in Hawaii on Friday. Ohtani and his agent, Nez Balelo, are being sued by a real estate investor and a broker in Hawaii who have accused Ohtani and Balelo of sabotaging a $240M real estate deal for a development on the Big Island. According to court documents that were obtained by Jimmy Golen of The Associated Press, real estate developer Kevin J. Hayes Sr. and real estate broker Tomoko Matsumoto say Ohtani and Balelo deliberately had them removed from the project “for no reason other than their own financial self-interest.” The lawsuit claims Ohtani was brought into the deal for his promotional value and that he and his agent pushed the founders of the project out using “threats and baseless legal claims.” “Defendants must be held accountable for their actions, not shielded by fame or behind-the-scenes agents acting with impunity,” the lawsuit states. “Plaintiffs bring this suit to expose Defendants’ misconduct and to ensure that the rules of contract, fair dealing, and accountability apply equally to all — celebrity or not.” Hayes and Matsumoto have also accused Ohtani and Balelo of trying to push them out of a similar neighboring development project. The $240M Big Island development is located along Hapuna Beach, which is rated one of the top beaches in the world. Matsumoto was supposed to be the listing agent for the properties, which average more than $17.3M each. A brochure for the project stated that Ohtani, who was called “Japan’s Babe Ruth” has committed to buying one of the 14 properties and acting as a “celebrity spokesperson” for the development. Ohtani signed a 10-year, $700M contract with the Dodgers prior to the 2024 season. The two-way star is having another monster year with a .284 average, 42 home runs, 78 RBI and a 1.013 OPS entering Tuesday. Ohtani has also returned to pitching this season and has a 2.37 ERA across 19 innings. Ohtani was also connected to a massive gambling scandal last year, though Major League Baseball determined that the 31-year-old was not guilty of any wrongdoing.

Jon Gruden 'looking forward to having the truth come out' amid lawsuit against NFL

Jon Gruden sent another warning shot toward the NFL after scoring a major win in court. On Tuesday, Gruden welcomed a ruling that will force the NFL to litigate the circumstances of his firing in court rather than closed-door arbitration. The former Las Vegas Raiders coach made it clear that he intends to continue his legal challenge to the NFL, ensuring that they are held accountable. “I’m looking forward to having the truth come out, and I want to make sure what happened to me doesn’t happen to anyone else,” Gruden said in a statement provided to ESPN’s Don Van Natta Jr. “The league’s actions disrupted the whole season. We were leading the division at the time and they completely blindsided me and the team.” The Raiders were 3-1 in 2021 when Gruden was forced to resign after offensive emails he had sent between 2011 and 2018 were leaked. Gruden has alleged that the NFL leaked the emails to force him out of a job after obtaining them during an investigation into the Washington Commanders. The NFL is set to appeal Monday’s ruling, but if that appeal fails, the league may be forced into public discovery. One alternative would be to offer Gruden a settlement, but he has not said whether or not he would be interested in such a resolution. Gruden has not held an NFL coaching job since the Raiders forced him out. He has recently spoken about possibly making a return to coaching at the college level.

Vikings WR gets brutal injury news for second straight season

A Minnesota Vikings wide receiver's season is already over. The Minnesota Vikings announced on Tuesday that wide receiver Rondale Moore is being placed on season-ending injured reserve due to a leg injury that he suffered in the team's first preseason game against the Houston Texans this past weekend. It is a devastating blow for Moore, who is now being sidelined for an entire season, before it even begins, for the second year in a row. Moore signed a one-year, $2 million contract in free agency with the Vikings this offseason in the hopes he could return from a different injury that cost him the entirety of the 2024 season. Moore was a member of the Atlanta Falcons in 2024 after being acquired in a trade with the Arizona Cardinals for backup quarterback Desmond Ridder. This is now two different teams that Moore has been a part of, but will never play a game for them due to injuries. Moore was injured while returning a punt. He began his career with the Arizona Cardinals, catching 135 passes for 1,201 yards over three seasons before being traded. He was never going to be counted on to be a key contributor for the Vikings offense this season, especially given the superstars they already have at wide receiver in Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, but he still had a chance to be an interesting depth player. Now it is fair to wonder what the rest of his career might even look like. Missing two full seasons due to two different leg injuries is going to be a brutal thing to try to come back from. Missing two seasons for any reason is difficult, but when you add the leg injuries to the equation, it makes the obstacle even steeper.

Vikings Signed Two Linebackers

The Minnesota Vikings announced they have signed OLB Cam Gill and LB Max Tooley to the roster. Gill, 27, went undrafted out of Wagner back in 2020 before catching on with the Buccaneers. He made the team’s roster as a rookie and did so once again in 2021. He wound up missing the entire 2022 season after suffering a Lisfranc injury during the preseason. The Buccaneers later re-signed Gill to a one-year deal for the 2023 season. Gill signed with the Panthers in May of 2024 but cut him in September. After a stint with the Lions on the practice squad, he was signed back by the Panthers. In 2024, Gill appeared in 10 games for the Panthers and recorded 22 total tackles.
