History has been made on the West Coast in the Blue Jays organization. The Vancouver Canadians, the Jays’ high-A affiliate, bested the Spokane Indians by a score of 11-6 yesterday and won their tenth game in a row, setting a new franchise record for consecutive games won.
It’s a stretch that dates back to June 5th, when the Canadians bested the Tri-City Dust Devils to start the streak. The Canadians have lost only one game in June, losing on June 4th to the Dust Devils by a score of 5-7, and have won 18 of their last 20 games.
Recent Canadians’ squads have hit the nine-game mark on multiple occasions but have struggled to collect that elusive double-digit mark until yesterday.
During this consecutive win streak, the bats have exploded to the tune of an 84-29 run differential, with the Canadians surpassing the double-digit run mark on four different occasions. Their best night came on June 13th, with the Canadians smashing Spokane by a score of 15-0. Six players on the team had multi-hit days, and collectively, they posted 16 hits and nine walks. Jackson Hornung had two doubles, and Je’Von Ward tagged on another, but the team used small ball to win the day, with the Canadians not putting a home run on the board while going 10 for 19 with RISP.

This month has been kind to a few players on the roster, such as Nick Goodwin. The shortstop owns a 1.164 OPS through 11 games this month, including six home runs and 17 RBIs in June alone. He earned NWL Player of the Week honours last week for his strong series against Tri-City. Ward also authored an OPS over 1.000 while collecting eight hits through 28 at-bats with 21 walks mixed in between. Leading the charge on the average front was Cutter Coffey, who went 17 for 50 (.340) in the batter’s box and accounted for 18 runs this month.
Pitching-wise, the Canadians were boosted with the additions of Trey Yesavage, Khal Stephen, and Gage Stanifer in mid-May, and although Yesavage advanced to New Hampshire last week, the remaining Canadians’ staff have posted strong numbers this past month.
Stephen has led the charge out of the rotation, allowing just two earned runs across his last 17 innings. Stanifer has made one start since Yesavage advanced on, and his June numbers sit with a 3.38 ERA through eight innings. Four relievers have not allowed an earned run with a minimum of five innings pitched – Yondrei Roas, Jonathan Todd, Aaron Munson, and Chay Yeager – and only a few arms are struggling during the Canadians’ recent hot stretch.
With their recent winning ways, the Canadians now sit first in the Northwest League with a 35-28 record and sit one game ahead of the Eugene Emeralds, whom they face this week across the border. They have a chance to continue the streak and widen the gap for their new franchise mark, but face a tough test against the Seattle Mariners’ affiliate.
