Venezuela, a nation that very few imagined would last this long in the World Baseball Classic tournament, has taken down some of baseball’s best to capture its first championship. After a thrilling win over Japan and an electric comeback over Team Italy, Venezuela shocked the world Tuesday night after knocking off the United States. With clutch hitting and superlative pitching, Venezuela proved to the whole world that baseball has more than one powerhouse country.

Pitching Stifles The United States’ Offense

Fans of Team USA felt confident. After seeing the matchup heading into the finals with Eduardo Rodriguez, a pitcher coming off a 5.02 ERA season, take the bump for the finals. Rodriguez silenced all of the noise. He threw over four innings of one-run, shutout ball against a USA offense that looked lackluster all tournament. Three straight Venezuelan relievers combined for nearly four more innings of shutout pitching until Bryce Harper answered the call for the United States.

Harper launched a game-tying two-run home run in the eighth inning that sent the United States dugout into a frenzy. Things were looking up for the Americans. Luis Arraez worked a leadoff walk in the top half of the ninth, and pinch runner Javier Sanoja scored on a Eugenio Suarez double. This was the game clincher as closer Daniel Palencia shut the door against Kyle Schwarber, Gunnar Henderson, and Roman Anthony.

A Disappointing End For The USA

For the second straight WBC tournament, the United States goes home with a silver medal. After a crushing 3-2 defeat against Japan in 2023, history repeats itself as they fall just one run short again against Venezuela. The offense never really found its footing after pool play, scoring just nine runs across the three games of knockout play. If not for Bryce Harper’s heroics in the eighth inning of the finals, the USA offense would have been shut out against Team Venezuela.

Aaron Judge, the captain and leader of the United States roster, went 0-4 with three strikeouts in the most important game of the tournament. The entire United States offense combined for just three hits all game. The growing concern for fans came to fruition as the team continued its struggles at the plate. A team that featured some of Major League Baseball’s most prolific hitters was not only shut down but completely dominated. Another tournament for the USA sees the nation fall just short of recapturing the championship and once again falling at the gates of victory.

End Of My WBC Finals Rant

Venezuela was a team that did not catch the eyes of many during the early parts of the tournament. The roster went toe-to-toe with the fearsome Dominican Republic lineup and nearly defeated the juggernauts, but ultimately fell short. After eliminating the reigning champions in Team Japan, Venezuela gained its spirit and swagger as every run scored called for a celebration from every member of the dugout. This game will go down in Venezuelan history and inspire the next several generations of talent to come from the great nation.

The WBC has grown as one of sports’ biggest and most exciting tournaments. With the start of the MLB season just a week away, it is the perfect appetizer for what is set to be an action-packed, thrilling season of baseball. Several nations competed against each other to showcase to the world the pool of talent it possesses. Many new fans will tune in to see how the nation’s players perform in professional play. Venezuela may have claimed the championship for the WBC, but baseball, as a whole, has won. The sport continues to grow nationwide and enters the forefront for the spring and summer.
