Washington Nationals Prospect Leaves Hospital After Scary Spring Training Injury

Washington Nationals outfielder Daylen Lile has left the hospital after suffering a scary injury against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, manager Davey Martinez told reporters Sunday.

Lile flew over the right field wall trying to rob a home run in the seventh inning, going head-over-heels into the Red Sox's bullpen. The relievers, coaches and trainers who saw it happen immediately waved down medical personnel, and while he could still move his arms and legs, Lile was wheeled off the field on a stretcher.

The 21-year-old prospect went to a local hospital, where he got a CAT scan and was ultimately diagnosed with a lower back contusion.

Martinez said Lile lucked out, as should be able to return to action once the pain dies down.

They immediately called for the trainers and he’s still down.

Lile was the Nationals' second round pick in the 2021 MLB Draft. He missed the entire 2022 minor league season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, so he didn't get to enjoy a full minor league season until 2023.

Last year, Lile played in 106 games at Low-A and High-A, batting .269 with nine home runs, 66 RBI, 23 stolen bases an .809 OPS. He made two errors and notched four assists in the field.

Saturday marked Lile's first appearance of Spring Training, and he was unable to earn an at-bat prior to his injury. Across 10 Grapefruit League games in 2023, Lile went 5-for-10 with one run, one stolen base and two RBI.

MLB Pipeline has Lile pegged as the No. 6 prospect in Washington's farm system, although the team boasts four top-50 outfielders ranked above him.
