Automated replay saved the St. Louis Cardinals as they escaped with a 6-5 home victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday evening.

The Cardinals are off to a solid start this season, hoping to be in the National League’s playoff picture by October. While they have yet to be playing at an elite level, they have done enough to be in the conversation as one of the more quality sides so far this season.

Going into the contest, St. Louis was coming off a 10-3 win over Cincinnati in Game 1. They needed to secure Game 2 to extend their time on the win column, something they succeeded in doing under unique circumstances.

Cincinnati was up to bat in the top of the ninth inning as St. Louis led at home. In other words, the Reds needed to score and tie the game or take the lead to extend it to the bottom half of the frame.

The Reds had all bases loaded as they could’ve tied the game with another walk. However, ABS replay came to the Cardinals’ rescue and overturned the ball four to a strike. This resulted in a groundout to end the game, keeping St. Louis as the victors.

“The most obvious case for ABS went against the Cincinnati Reds today. Ball four which would’ve tied the game is overturned into a strike and Sal Stewart grounds out to end the game on the next pitch,” the post read.

How Cardinals played against Reds

St. Louis trailed 5-4 in the eighth inning as Lars Nootbaar stepped up to bat in that frame. He came through with a clutch two-run homer to give his team the final lead of the game.

St. Louis improved to a 34-28 record on the season, holding the second spot in the NL Central Division standings. They are above the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs while trailing the Milwaukee Brewers.

Rolling with three straight wins, the Cardinals look to complete the three-game series sweep against the Reds in Game 3. The contest takes place on June 7 at 2:15 p.m. ET.
